Outreach and Justice Ministries: Growing Community Garden Mission and Practices
Engaging in Service: A vital part of Sunnyside’s vision is to maintain a grounding in the community as we strive to be the church in the world. We are always looking for ways to help persons grow in discipleship, engage in Christian Practice and form enriching Christian Community that bridges the Church and the world.
Garden Mission and Practices:
Our mission is to build community through gardening and food production while tending the "place" we have been given.
Together participants commit to tending the garden using organic methods with the purpose of donating at least 50% of the produce to local organizations (including the Free Store of Kalamazoo, and our local Loaves and Fishes Pantry) that distribute the produce to families in need.
In the 2012 gardening season approximately 40 volunteers throughout the gardening season brought in over 200 pounds of produce. This harvest was distributed with 80% of the food going to the local Kalamazoo Loaves and Fishes Pantry, 15% going to volunteers, and 5% distributed through the Free Store.
The harvest included:
arugula, basil, beans, beets, bell peppers, blueberries, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, cucumbers, corn, chives, carrots, dill, eggplant, fennel, kale, lettuce, oregano, okra, green oinons, yellow onions, red onions, parsley, peas, pumpkins, potatoes, hot peppers, radishes, raspberries, rutabaga, swiss chard, acorn squash, yellow squash, butternut squash, tomatoes, thyme, turnips, tarragon, watermelon, and zuchinni
