Growing Community Garden is supported by a wide range of churches, organizations and many volunteers and members of the community. Located beside Sunnyside UMC (2800 Gull Rd), the garden is designed to connect east side Kalamazoo neighbors to the earth, to local food, and to each other. Through hands-on education, children and adults learn organic gardening techniques, connecting them in a meaningful way to the earth and increasing access to nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables. The garden is available for all. The community is encouraged to come and harvest food as they need it. The garden is also a place of respite and rest. Individuals and families are welcome to come sit, walk around, meditate, reflect, or play on the playground. We have several beautiful campsites around the state with week-long and partial week camps all summer long for kids of all ages. As the pastor of this congregation, I can attest that in all of my life growing up in the church, camp has had the most profound impact on my spiritual life. Since I began attending in third grade, I have not missed a summer. I have continued to serve in my adult years as a counselor, teacher and leader and find great joy in the opportunity to serve on a high school camp staff with several members of our church!
